Little Black Ants

The Little Black Ant is a worker ant that is shiny dark brown to jet black in color. The queens are larger and have wings June thru August. Colony may have thousands of workers and multiple queens. The little black ant lives and nest primarily outdoors in decaying woods, tree stump, rock piles, or under any large object and in mulch. They will occasionally forage indoors. When they move indoors, they nest in wall voids, crack in basement or crawl space, under cabinets, in any electrical appliances.

Our Ant control Process:

Direct treatment of the colony is the most effective way of controlling the little black ants, however locating the colony is not always possible. Exterior of the home can be treated with a residual insecticide to prevent ants form entering the home. Insecticidal baits are most effective if the nest cannot be located. Since these ants feed on carbohydrates or proteins you may need both types of bait to determine which type of bate to use for control. The bait should be none-repellant, slow acting, and toxic at very low concentrations.

Habitat, Risks, Signs & PREVENTION

Understanding Little Black Ants

Common Habitat of Little Black Ants:

Little black ants are small, social insects that commonly nest in soil, under stones, logs, landscape timbers, and pavement cracks. They are also frequently found near foundations, patios, and along irrigation lines where moisture accumulates. Indoors, little black ants may establish satellite colonies in wall voids, behind baseboards, or near plumbing fixtures as they follow persistent scent trails in search of food and water.

Risks & Potential Damage:

While little black ants are generally considered nuisance pests, they can contaminate food and leave trail pathways throughout kitchens, pantries, and other living spaces. Large foraging trails may become difficult to eliminate without professional intervention, and recurring activity can indicate hidden entry points or conducive conditions that need correction. Unlike carpenter ants, little black ants do not cause structural damage, but their presence can signal broader sanitation or moisture issues.

Signs of Little Black Ants Infestation:

The most noticeable sign of a little black ant infestation is visible ant trails traveling between food sources and nesting sites. These trails are often seen along baseboards, countertops, sinks, and in pantries where sweet or greasy foods are accessible. You may also observe ants near pet food bowls, garbage cans, or outdoor doors. Increased ant activity during warmer months is common, and seeing multiple workers inside indicates an established colony nearby.

Methods of Little Black Ants Prevention:

Preventing little black ants begins with reducing access to food, water, and entry points. Store food in sealed containers, clean up spills promptly, and eliminate standing water around sinks, drains, and pet areas. Seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors, foundations, and utility penetrations to reduce access. Additionally, reducing excess moisture around the home and maintaining tidy landscaping can significantly lower ant pressure and discourage foraging trails from forming.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently-asked Questions

Here are some frequently Asked Questions About Ants control in Naperville & surrounding cities

A three-pronged strategy works best to get rid of small black ants permanently.

The first step is exclusion. Exclusion involves caulking entry points, especially around foundation, doors and windows.

Also, remove any rotted wood from the structure, fix leaky roofs, windows, or any leaky pipes to make your home less attractive for the ants to invade and nest in your home.

The second step is sanitation. This involves keeping your kitchen counters, pantry and the rest of your indoors clean. This also means trimming your vegetation and keeping mulch, firewood and other debris away from your structures.

Finally, use of baits and insecticides. Baits include foods laced with pesticides, which are slow acting toxins. If ants accept bait, they carry it to their colonies and large numbers of baits placed at strategic locations may be sufficient to eliminate ant colonies. If ants reject baits, then the use of insecticides, such as liquid pesticides is recommended.

An exterminator has the expertise, skills and technologies to identify the root of the problem, including entry points, nesting areas, sanitary lapses that may be attracting black ants, and safely use strategically placed baits or insecticides to eliminate ants infestation.

Little black ants are a common household pest that can be a real nuisance. These tiny insects are known for their persistence and ability to infiltrate even the cleanest of homes. While they may seem harmless, little black ants can pose a significant threat, contaminating food sources and potentially spreading diseases.

The best way to eliminate ants is to directly treat the colonies. However, locating colonies is not always possible. In such cases, insecticidal baits are most effective. We also recommend treating the exterior of the home with a residual insecticide to stop ants from entering your property.

Make sure the bait has very low concentration toxicity to prevent it from affecting pets and children.

Removing any rotted wood from the structure, fixing leaky roof ,  windows, or fixing any leaky pipes will make your home less attractive for the ants to invade and nest in your home.
